Patliputra School, Patna, he obtained his B.Sc Honors (Geology) from Science College, Patna University, followed by an M.Sc and Ph.D. in Geology from the same institution. His fascination with the Earth’s geological processes led him to specialize in geology, with a keen interest in hydrogeology, aquifer mapping, urban hydrogeology, and groundwater management.

Dr. Shekhar is renowned for pioneering the National Aquifer Mapping and Ground Water Management Programme (NAQUIM) in India.
