Shubham Kumar Tiwary, born in Bikram (Khoraitha) in the Patna district of Bihar to Mr. R. P. Tiwary and Tanuja Tiwary, has dedicated his life to making English accessible to the people of Bihar. An English language instructor by profession, his mission is simple yet profound: no one in Bihar should be held back due to a lack of proficiency in English. His educational journey began in Patna, Bihar, where he completed his degree in English from Patna University. As a student under the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), he initially struggled with the English language. However, through sheer hard work and dedication, he not only overcame these challenges but also set a new standard of excellence in English within his community. He strongly believes that the imposition of Hindi across India has marginal[1]ized non-Hindi speaking regions, thereby reinforcing the dominance of Hindi speakers while potentially weakening the unity of the country. In his view, true patriotism lies in empowering one’s own community, which in turn strengthens the entire nation. Recognizing the need for a common language to bridge communication gaps in India’s multilingual society, he observed how students, engineers, businesspeople, lawyers, and even homemakers increasingly found it necessary to use English effectively. He was acutely aware of how many students in Bihar struggled in their careers due to their lack of English proficiency. Whether in academics or in the job market—be it private or government sectors—English has become indispensable. Driven by his own experiences and understanding of these challenges, he decided to address this issue by establishing “Spoken Zone” in 2018, a language institute where English is taught in an engaging and accessible manner. Although it was difficult to manage everything alone at first, he persisted, and his efforts soon paid off. Today, Spoken Zone boasts around 2,000 students, many of whom have achieved significant success in their careers. His commitment to his mission extends beyond just teaching; he ensures that no student is left behind due to financial constraints. For those unable to afford the fees, he provides not only education but also accommodation and food, reinforcing his belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed. His dedication and determination have not gone unnoticed. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the “Bharat Gaurav Award,” “Bihar Gaurav Award,” and “Bihar Ratna Samman,” among many others. These accolades reflect his unwavering commitment to improving English language proficiency in Bihar. He lives by the mantra “No English, No Life; Better English, Better Life,” encapsulating his belief in the transformative power of language. He recognizes that English is a flexible and dynamic language, offering multiple ways to express the same idea, and he is committed to ensuring that his students can harness this power to improve their lives.
