Sunil Nishikant Godbole’s journey from a humble middle-class upbringing to a distinguished career in civil engineering and public service is a testament to his determination and resilience. Born to two dedicated teachers in a Zilla Parishad high school, Sunil’s path to success began when he left home at 15 to pursue an education in engineering. This decision set the stage for a remarkable career filled with both challenges and triumphs.

At the age of 18, after completing his Diploma in Civil Engineering, Sunil secured a government job as a Junior Engineer. This early achievement marked the beginning of a career that would span nearly four decades. The initial years were demanding, with Sunil adapting to the transferable nature of his job, which took him to various remote locations. He worked on surveying, estimating, and constructing irrigation projects, including canals and water retention systems. Often, he had to travel by bicycle to reach construction sites, reflecting his commitment to his work.

As he  gained experience, he transitioned to administrative roles, working in offices of the Superintending Engineer, the Collectorate, and the Divisional office. His dedication and proficiency in technical matters, along with his skills in drafting and communication, earned him the respect of his superiors. For approximately 18 years, Sunil’s workdays often stretched from early morning until late evening, showcasing his unwavering commitment to excellence.

Sunil’s hard work and dedication culminated in his promotion to Sub-Divisional Officer, a position he held for over three years before retiring. His tenure in the irrigation department lasted an impressive 39 years and seven months, making him one of the longest-serving employees. One of his most significant accomplishments was managing the construction of a barrage on the Godavari River, a project with a budget exceeding 100 crore rupees. Sunil successfully completed this project within the stipulated time frame, maintaining the highest quality standards and earning widespread recognition.

Retirement did not mark the end of Sunil’s journey. He joined the Anti-Corruption Foundation of India as the National Director, continuing to serve society in a meaningful way. His contributions were acknowledged through several prestigious awards, including the Diamond of India Award, an Honorary Doctorate from the World Human Rights Protection Commission, the Andy Hyman Award for Social Services, the India Brand Icon Award, and the Rashtrasewa Award for Services and Administration.

His life story is a powerful testament to the values of perseverance, dedication, and excellence.
