“Peter Pullambra’s St. Joseph’s School: A Legacy of Education and Sustainability in Gujarat”
Nestled in the tranquil village of Khanusa, Gujarat, St. Joseph’s School stands as a sprawling 20-acre testament to Indian pride and rich history. This institution, a beacon of learning and sustainability, is the brainchild of Mr. Peter Pullambra. Fondly known as “Uncle” to generations of students, Mr. Pullambra is a visionary leader who dared to dream big, striving to blend education with a profound respect for nature and sustainability.
Born into a farming family as the second of eight children, Peter Pullambra’s life was rooted in a deep connection with the land. Early mornings on the farm, coupled with academic pursuits, instilled in him a work ethic and a respect for nature that would shape his educational philosophy. After completing his B.Sc. in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Calicut, he embarked on a teaching career that would eventually lead him to establish St. Joseph’s School. His journey took him from Kannur to Durgapur, Liluah, and finally Mount Abu in 1972. It was here, in 1974, that Mr. and Mrs. Pullambra founded their first St. Joseph’s School, marking the beginning of a legacy that would span decades and touch countless lives.
In 1980, the Pullambras relocated to Vijapur, where they laid the foundation for St. Joseph’s School in Khanusa. From its inception, the school was a harbinger of progressive and international educational philosophies. It quickly reached full capacity, reflecting the demand for its unique approach to education. By 1987, the school’s first batch of SSCE students achieved a 100% pass rate, a testament to the quality of education and the effectiveness of Mr. Pullambra’s vision.
Under Mr. Pullambra’s astute leadership, St. Joseph’s School has embraced sustainability as a way of life. The school’s ecosystem is deeply intertwined with nature, providing students with a holistic education that extends beyond traditional classroom boundaries. Students actively participate in organic farming, cultivating crops and managing fodder for cattle. The school’s infrastructure includes rainwater harvesting systems, percolation wells, biogas plants, and solar cooking facilities, all of which serve as practical learning tools for the students.
These initiatives are not just about teaching practical skills; they are about instilling a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness in the students. Mr. Pullambra’s goal has always been to offer a life close to nature, enriched by the invaluable lessons it imparts. His vision is to prepare students to be self-sustaining, environmentally aware, and responsible global citizens.
The impact of Mr. Pullambra’s work is profound. Alumni from various ages and geographies fondly remember their time at St. Joseph’s School and the strong moral and ethical foundation it provided. They attribute their success and happiness to the lessons learned under Mr. Pullambra’s guidance. His commitment to balancing academics, nature, and life has created a nurturing and supportive environment that continues to shape the lives of his students.
Mr. Pullambra’s efforts align with 11 of the 17 sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, a remarkable achievement that underscores his impact. Away from the limelight, he remains an unsung hero, remembered fondly as “Uncle” by thousands of alumni worldwide. His legacy is one of dedication, vision, and an unwavering commitment to education and sustainability, making him an inspiring figure in the world of education.
