“Dr. Syed Zaheer Hasan: Leader in Hydrocarbon Research and Sustainable Energy”
Dr. Syed Zaheer Hasan is currently serving as the Director and Scientist-H in the Petroleum Research Management division of the Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. With a robust academic foundation, he completed his higher education at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, U.P., earning his Ph.D. in Geology in 1999. His academic journey continued with a post-doctoral fellowship under the Young Scientist Scheme of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Beyond his professional commitments, he is deeply passionate about engaging in scientific and technological discussions with young minds, encouraging them to actively participate in research. His research expertise lies in hydrocarbon studies, particularly in the areas of oil and gas displacement, reservoir properties, and techniques to enhance hydrocarbon recovery. His research interests also extend to alternative energy sources, such as biodiesel and biogas, as well as the qualitative assessment and management of water resources. His work has significantly contributed to understanding and evaluating reservoir production potential, developing incremental hydrocarbon recovery techniques, and exploring eco-friendly methods for producing biodiesel and biogas. Additionally, he has been actively involved in research on groundwater resource evaluation, addressing waterborne diseases, and exploring sustainable agricultural growth in relation to water availability. His efforts towards decarbonization are evident in his research on CO2 sequestration, both geological and biological, which forms a crucial part of his ongoing research activities. His research achievements are distinguished by two patents and numerous R & D projects sanctioned by national and state funding agen[1]cies. His contributions to the scientific community are further recognized through his association with various national and international scientific societies, where he holds positions as Fellow and Life Member. In addition to his research, he plays a significant role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge as the chief editor, editorial board member, and reviewer for various national and international journals and science magazines. His excellence in the field acknowledged with several prestigious awards, including the “Bharat Ratna Dr. Abdul Kalam Gold Medal Award” which he received during the 77th National Unity Conference held on December 26, 2020 organized by the Global Economic Progress and Research Association (GEPRA). With over two decades of research experience, he has garnered numerous accolades, including research fellowships, a post-doctoral fellowship, and fellowships from the Indian Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of India. His prolific contributions to scientific literature include forty publications in reputed national and international journals, three book chapters, and numerous abstracts in conference proceedings. In 2018, he successfully supervised a Ph.D. candidate, adding to his academic mentorship achievements. He has also organized several national and international events and training courses, further solidifying his influence in the scientific communi[1]ty. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and technology, particularly in the context of community welfare, he was awarded the NESA Scientist of the Year Award in 2021 by the National Environmental Science Academy (NESA). His work is a testament to his unwavering commitment to maintaining ecological balance, particularly in the domains of potable water and environment friendly, economically viable energy resources. His publications and patents reflect his consistent efforts in these areas, underscoring the broader significance of his contributions towards sustainable development. Through his ongoing involvement in water quality assessment, decarbonization, and energy efficiency, he continues to make impactful contributions that inspire and enrich future generations for a sustainable future. For his significant contribution in research in the field of earth sciences he has also been felicitated with Research Excellence Award-2022 and Lifetime Achievement Award-2022 by the Institute of Researchers. Very recently Bharat Pratibha Sammaan Council has nominated Dr. Syed Zaheer Hasan for Bharat Pratibha Sammaan a distinguished non-government civil honor for his significant contribu[1]tions to the field of science and technology.
