Dr. Sutapa Roy: Transforming Lives Through Education, Empowerment, and Leadership
Dr. Sutapa Roy, born in Varanasi to Subrata Roy and Gita Roy, exemplifies resilience and dedication. Losing her mother at the tender age of two, she was lovingly raised by her maternal aunt, Anjali Roy, whose unwavering care and affection shaped Sutapa’s values and character. With a nurturing environment filled with love, Sutapa grew into a person determined to make a difference in the lives of others.
Educated at Loreto Convent, Ranchi, and later at Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata, where she graduated in 1995, She fulfilled her father’s aspirations while nurturing her own dreams. She earned her Master’s degree with distinction from the University of Calcutta in 1997, setting the foundation for her illustrious career.
From an early age, She envisioned empowering girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds through education. Her determination and methodical efforts turned this dream into reality. Today, she serves as the Head of an esteemed institution in Kolkata, a testament to her dedication and perseverance.
She began her professional journey in 1998 as a part-time teacher in the Department of Philosophy at Shri Shikshayatan College, Kolkata. The same year, she cleared the National Eligibility Test and received the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship from the University Grants Commission. Pursuing her doctoral studies under Dr. Chhanda Gupta at Jadavpur University, her research focused on Epistemology and Metaphysics. In 2001, she joined Prabhu Jagatbandhu College, Howrah, as an Assistant Professor in Philosophy.
At this suburban college catering to economically disadvantaged communities, She went beyond her teaching duties to empower women through education and counselling. Recognizing the challenges faced by her students, she organized community outreach programs, mentored young girls to achieve economic independence, and inspired many to follow in her footsteps.
As the Coordinator of the Indira Gandhi National Open University Study Centre, she played a crucial role in enabling education for those unable to pursue traditional academic paths. Her efforts ensured that numerous aspirants achieved their goals despite financial and societal challenges.
Her work highlighted the importance of mental health alongside education. She observed that even economically independent women often struggled with mental health issues, hindering their empowerment. Determined to address this gap, she pursued counselling training from the National Health Care Academy (NHCA), Singapore, and introduced psychological counselling services in her college and surrounding communities. Today, as a mentor and Course Director at NHCA, she has profoundly impacted the mental well-being of countless individuals.
Her contributions extend to academia through her published works, research projects funded by the University Grants Commission, and guidance of several PhD scholars. Recently, she delivered a lecture in Bangladesh addressing the socio-economic status of women and strategies for empowerment.
With over two decades of unwavering commitment to education and empowerment, She has inspired generations to rise above challenges and achieve their potential. Her leadership style emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and inspiring others to succeed. She believes in marching ahead with everyone rather than leading alone, redefining leadership through empathy and empowerment.
Faith in a higher power fuels her motivation and resilience. Her journey is a testament to her dedication, vision, and ability to transform lives, leaving an indelible mark on the path toward equality and progress.
