Prof. Dr. M. Wali: Celebrated Physician, Scholar, and Presidential Advisor in Indian Medicine
Prof. Dr. M. Wali, a distinguished alumnus of GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, holds an MD in Medicine and has achieved numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career. Among his many honours, he is a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri Award and was named the Best Alumnus of Kanpur University. Beginning his government service in 1980 with the Central Health Services (CHS), he has since made significant contributions to medical science and public health. He is currently a senior consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
His academic contributions are noteworthy. He has authored 124 research papers in both national and international journals and has written over 20 textbooks focusing on cardiology, medicine, and hypertension. A strong proponent of Ayurveda, he has chaired committees under the AYUSH Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, working to integrate traditional and modern medicine. His dedication to teaching and research is widely recognized, having served as an associate professor and professor of medicine at institutions such as Dr. RML Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College.
He has been honoured with a Doctor of Science degree from Neissen, Germany, and holds prestigious fellowships from the American College of Cardiology and the University of Michigan. He completed significant research on renovascular hypertension during his tenure at the Mayo Clinic from 2004 to 2006. Additionally, he has been conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow, UK. Demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning, he also earned an MBA in Hospital Administration.
Over his career, He has received numerous accolades, including the Chancellor’s Medal for being the Best MBBS Student, Presidential Gold Medal from Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee for his work with the Indian Red Cross, and various lifetime achievement awards in 2017, 2019, and 2024. His contributions to healthcare have earned him the titles of Medical Icon and Oscar Healthcare Awardee. He has also been actively involved in initiatives like tobacco harm reduction, emphasizing his dedication to public health.
One of His most distinguished roles has been serving as the personal physician to three Presidents of India—R. Venkataraman, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, and Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. Additionally, he was deputed to care for former Prime Minister V.P. Singh. His unique position as the trusted medical advisor to the nation’s highest offices underscores his exceptional expertise and reliability.
