“Legacy of Excellence: Prof. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Kapoor’s Contributions to Veterinary Science and Public Health”
Prof. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Kapoor, born on July 10, 1958, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, is a distinguished figure in the fields of veterinary sciences, public health, and animal welfare. With a career spanning over four decades, he has made significant contributions to veterinary education, research, and social service, earning recognition both nationally and internationally for his work.
He began his academic journey at Fort Higher Secondary School in Bikaner, followed by Doonger College, and later the University of Udaipur, where he completed his B.V.Sc. & A.H. in 1979. He pursued further studies in veterinary public health, obtaining his M.V.Sc. in 1982, and his Ph.D. in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology from CCSHAU, Hisar, in 1993. His doctoral thesis was honored with the prestigious National ICAR Jawaharlal Nehru Award.
HIs professional career commenced as a Veterinary Assistant Surgeon in Nimbahera, Rajasthan, after which he joined CCSHAU as an Assistant Scientist in 1983. He contributed to several major research projects, including the ICAR National Fellow Project on bovine mycoplasmal reproductive disorders and the CSIR Extramural Research Grant on Mycoplasma mycoides in ruminants. His work has greatly enhanced rapid diagnostic methods, significantly improving animal health and management practices. His expertise has also taken him to international platforms, where he served as a member of the International Organization for Mycoplasmology (IOM), USA, and the International Research Programme Committee of Mycoplasma (IRPCM).
He has authored over 222 publications, including research papers, reviews, and book chapters, many of which are featured in high-impact journals. His outstanding research contributions have earned him multiple awards, such as the Dr. K.S. Nair Gold Medal, the IOM Travel Fellowship Award, and recognition for his best research papers. His involvement in more than 56 national and international conferences further solidifies his reputation as a leader in veterinary science.
In addition to his research, He has been a dedicated educator and mentor. He has guided numerous students through their M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. theses, contributing to research on diverse topics such as skin diseases in dogs, Glanders in equines, and molecular characterization of various pathogens. His role as Professor and Head at prestigious institutions like Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and LUVAS has helped shape veterinary education in India.
Following his retirement from LUVAS in 2018, He continued to make significant contributions as the Registrar at Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU). In this capacity, he played a crucial role in the establishment of new colleges, the formation of MoUs with academic institutions, and the strengthening of BASU’s research capabilities. He also served as the In-charge Vice-Chancellor on multiple occasions, demonstrating strong leadership in governance and faculty development.
Outside of academia and research, He has been deeply involved in animal welfare and social causes. He has served as a Central Government nominee on institutional animal ethics committees and has supported several charitable initiatives, including providing aid to cancer and tuberculosis patients, supporting underprivileged communities, and advocating for environmental conservation through tree plantation drives.
His career has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the ‘Bharat Jyoti Award,’ ‘Glory of India Award,’ and ‘Rashtriya Ratan Award.’ He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and the Indian Public Health Association. His contributions to veterinary science, public health, and social welfare have left a lasting impact, inspiring future generations of professionals dedicated to animal health and societal well-being.
