Dr. Hiteshkumar H. Mehta, a 53-year-old from Anand-Nadiad, Gujarat, has made significant strides in the field of Biotechnology, earning national and international recognition for his work. With an educational background that includes a B.Sc. in Chemistry, an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics, a Ph.D. in Biotechnology, and a diploma in Pharmacy, Dr. Mehta has amassed a diverse and robust foundation of knowledge. His varied academic pursuits have significantly contributed to his extensive research experience, showcasing his ability to integrate different scientific disciplines to achieve remarkable results.

He  began his professional career at the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in Anand, where he served as a Senior Laboratory Technician in Molecular Genetics. Over his 14-year tenure, he participated in several high-impact projects funded by both governmental and non-governmental organizations. These projects included “Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism & DNA Fingerprinting for Genetic Characterization & Parentage Determination in Cattle and Buffaloes,” “Development of a Recombinant DNA Vaccine Against Cattle Ticks Boophilus microplus,” and “Creation of a Framework Linkage Map in Buffalo Using Cattle Specific Microsatellite Markers.” In 2006, he joined the College of Veterinary Science and A.H. at AnandAgricultural University to work on a DBT-sponsored project titled “Differential Gene Expression in Buffalo Udder During Lactogenic Pathway in Induced Lactation Model.” Through this project, Dr. Mehta identified approximately 161 ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) crucial to lactogenesis, with about 40% being novel discoveries.

His  academic career continued as he served as an Assistant Professor and Acting Principal at Shree P.M. Patel Institutes in Anand. Since 2019, he has been a valued member of the Sankalchand Patel University in Visnagar, Gujarat. His scholarly contributions include around 25 publications in prestigious national and international journals, 61 conference papers, 25 book chapters, and one published book. Additionally, he has submitted 1201 DNA/RNA/Protein sequences to GenBank, USA. One of his notable achievements is the development of a low-cost biodegradable sanitary napkin using coconut husk fibers. Dr. Mehta holds three patents, two of which are Indian and one is from the UK.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the All Round Best NCC Cadet, the Devi Ahilyabai Scholarship, the Jewel of India award from the Indian Solidarity Council, and the Award of Excellence in Research from SBVS. These accolades highlight his contributions to research and teaching.

His  family has been a cornerstone of support throughout his journey. His wife, Sejal, son Dr. Varun Mehta (M.VSc. – LPT), daughter-in-law Dr. Mansi Shah Mehta (DNB-Family Medicine), and daughter Ms. Yukta (M.Sc. – Plant Pathology) have encouraged and supported his pursuits, helping him achieve his extraordinary milestones.
